We are separating — where do we start with parenting and property?

Put children’s safety first, then look at parenting agreements, Family Court information, and Community Law for legal basics.

Separation is stressful. If children are involved, focus on stable routines and safety first. Parents can make informal or written parenting agreements; if you cannot agree, Family Court publishes pathways for parenting orders and mediation (Family Dispute Resolution).

Relationship property and care arrangements have different legal rules. Community Law centres and the Family Court website explain forms and costs in plain language. Keep communication civil where possible — written messages help.
