How does child support work between parents?
Inland Revenue Child Support administers most assessments — payments are based on a formula unless you have an agreement.
When parents live apart, child support helps cover a child’s costs. Inland Revenue Child Support usually runs the assessment using a formula based on incomes, care nights, and children’s ages. Some parents make their own voluntary agreement instead.
If income or care arrangements change, update Child Support promptly — debts can build. The official website explains how to apply, pay, or dispute an assessment.
