What is a WOF and when does my car need one?

A warrant of fitness checks key safety items — older cars need inspections more often than newer ones.

A warrant of fitness (WOF) is a regular safety inspection for light vehicles. Inspectors check brakes, tyres, lights, steering, and other critical items. You cannot legally drive on the road without a current WOF where one is required.

How often you need a WOF depends on vehicle age. NZTA publishes the schedule. Fix failed items promptly — driving with an expired WOF can mean fines and insurance problems.

Keep your WOF receipt with registration papers. Educational only — not mechanical advice.
