What is redundancy and what should I check?
Redundancy is about the job disappearing, not personal performance — notice, consultation, and pay depend on your agreement and law.
Redundancy happens when an employer no longer needs a role done by anyone, or needs fewer people. It is not the same as being fired for misconduct. Employers should consult in good faith and follow notice periods in your agreement or minimum legal notice.
Check whether your agreement includes redundancy compensation — New Zealand law does not require a statutory redundancy payment unless your contract or policy provides it. Employment NZ explains consultation, notice, and final pay including holidays.
If the process feels rushed or unfair, write a timeline and contact Employment NZ or Community Law. Update your budget and WINZ if income will stop. Not employment advice.
