Money & debt
I have started work — what do I need to know about tax?
Get an IRD number, check your tax code on myIR, and keep payslips — Inland Revenue explains PAYE and refunds.
Most employees pay tax through PAYE — your employer deducts it from wages using a tax code you give them. If you do not have an IRD number yet, apply through Inland Revenue before or soon after starting work so you are taxed at the right rate.
Check your tax code matches your situation (main job, second job, student loan, etc.). At year end you can see income and tax in myIR. If too much or too little tax was taken, Inland Revenue explains how refunds or bills work.
Cash-in-hand work without tax still needs to be declared. Sorted and Community Law can point you to basics; complex situations belong with Inland Revenue or a tax agent. Not tax advice.
Calm next moves
- Apply for an IRD number online if you need one.
- Give your employer the correct tax code form.
- Keep payslips and payment summaries.
