Money & debt
What is a calm first step when debt feels overwhelming?
Write each debt down — who, how much, next due date — then use free helplines and Sorted debt guidance.
Debt is money you owe. Naming it on one page often lowers the fog: creditor name, amount, interest or fees if you know them, and the next payment date. High-interest debt usually costs more to leave unpaid — but you still do not have to fix everything tonight.
Open letters and messages rather than ignoring them; note dates. Free financial mentors and MoneyTalks can help you make a plan. Sorted publishes public guidance on tackling debt as part of getting money sorted.
If anyone is threatening or you feel unsafe, that is a different pathway — seek help from police (111 if urgent) or family violence supports. For money pressure alone, start with one list and one call.
Calm next moves
- List three debts first if a full list feels too big.
- Do not send money you cannot spare until you understand fees and priority bills.
